How do you undo good work in a music album?
Remix the best numbers. That’s how. Sukhvinder Singh, after average music in Halla Bol, comes up with some great tracks for Subhas Ghai’s Black and White. The first half of the album, where singh sticks to traditional and simple melodies makes for great listening. Then come the remixes, and you wonder why the simplicity couldn’t carry on. Even the romantic number isn’t spared.
The album kicks off with Main Chala, Sukhvinder Singh doing a great job on a song that’s immensely hummable.
Peer Manava has a folksy feel to it, but sounds different from a lot of the Bhangra based clutter doing the rounds of the airwaves these days.
Singh comes up with what probably can count as his best effoet till date with Jogi Aaya. Everything about this song clicks. The tune is haunting, and the vocals are rendered in an almost trance-like feel.
Shreya Ghoshal matches up to the level of Main Chala with main Chali. Haq Allah, with two versions is passable. Yeh Hindustan Hain, sung by Udit Narayan and Jagjit Singh, the latter is much better, reminds one of I Love My India. This would have been a solid album if it wasn’t for the jarring remixes.
