Tarun Mansukhani, Director, Dostana, Bonds With Students of Whistling Woods International

On Dostana his debut hit film, Tarun said that his “attempt to make a light-hearted film on a serious subject—a commercial masala film, was also appreciated at an international festival, because it was not preachy, but dealt with the subject with humour.” On story-telling, Tarun advised, “Write the script as you would imagine it” and dwelt on the importance of a relationship of trust with the DOP, in achieving the look of the film. To a question on editing: “A lot happens on the editing table; when you watch your film, be honest with yourself.” On music, he believes that “it is something that is written into the script of the film, with each song having it own place.” He referred to changes taking place in the industry —the entry of corporates, the influx of new talent, and the audiences of today for films as varied as A Wednesday and Rock On!!

On talks of a sequel, Tarun said, “With Dostana, I pushed the envelope-it worked.  Now, I’ll try tearing the envelope…” On the role of an AD, he said, “None of us are as prepared as one would expect. Some things happen on the go. … It’s a 24 hour job. Understand everything on the sets, including placement of the camera, lensing etc. …Also, its an industry full of egos. Throw yours out of the window.” About WWI, he said, “You should realise how lucky you are, you have this set-up—it’s unbelievable! You are already on the front foot.” On the interaction with WWI students, he said, “I can see the future of our industry. And it is bright!”
